Yesterday we were in Detroit for family pictures when that big power outage occured. About 4:00 the air went off, and the water went off. So we decided to drive to my grandparents for some air before the pictures. It took us over an hour to go just a few miles. All the traffic lights were out and no one seemed to know that you are supposed to have a four way stop in that case. People were driving crazy and cutting people off.

When we finally got to my grandparents they let us know that power was off from there up until Niagra Falls where the power grid got hit by lightning or something like that. So no eating out since the restaurants didn’t have power. All the family slowly made it to my grandparents. We took pictures anyway-everyone was there we were all just a little “glistening.” It was so very hot and humid there. We grilled hamburgers for dinner and had a great time talking with family. I got to hear all about my cousins who are going to college.

We decided rather than stay the night in a sticky, hot house with no water for drinks or showers and no electricity we would drive the 2 ½ hours home. We also didn’t really want to be in Detroit. People were worried about riots when they realize there are no security systems. As soon as we drove to Brighton (about 30 miles east of Lansing) we saw lights on again. Traffic was backed up with all the people trying to get off at the exit. We got to our nice, cool house a little while ago. It is half past midnight, so I am off to bed.

The experience really helped me see some things I took for granted.

am thankful for working stoplights

for police officers to help control things

for water that comes right out of the faucet

for window air conditioners when it is hot and sticky

for car air conditioners

for a family that can go with the flow

for grills to eat food

for fridges to keep food cold

for microwaves to warm food up

for lights to see at night

for safe travel home

for showers
