In my newest Church Herald an article on self-care and caring for others caught my interest. Many volunteers suffer burn-out because they think that their only choice is between self-centeredness and selfishness. Bill Hybels writes, "Many Christians live the phrase 'busyness is next to godliness.' But, anyone who is truly self-less all the time will probably end up in an institution. The middle ground of self-care is essential for preserving our giftedness, our sanity, our relationships, and our heath so that we can engage in continued service. Self care is not an option. It's a necessary component in the life of a joyful, effective, long-term servant of Christ."
